What Is The Definition Of A Wishbone Offense In Football?
1. In a wishbone offense, a fullback is positioned behind the quarterback under center, and two running backs are positioned behind and to either side of the fullback (creating a wishbone shape).
This formation, which was especially prominent in 1970s and ‘80s college football, is also sometimes known as “the bone.” It is considered to be a powerful offensive strategy that creates multiple options for a running play. This basically creates a “triple option” for the offense on that given play. With there being one lead blocker and two running backs, this scheme forces a defender to leave one of the running backs open. It is then up to the offense to decide whether to dive, pass or quarterback run after the defender chooses which offensive player to cover.
Examples Of How Wishbone Offense Is Used In Commentary
1. With a mobile quarterback in Tebow, the Gators are going to be running the wishbone most of the morning until the Tigers prove they can defend against it.
