1. The special teams in football are comprised of players who come onto the field for kicking. Special teams are deployed for kickoffs, punts, punt returns, field goals and extra point attempts. Some positions included on special teams include a kicker, punter, holder, long snapper, gunner and returner.
The rest of the unit is comprised of a variety of position players, such as wide receivers, tight ends and defensive backs. These players are backup players for their primary positions, but are key players on special teams.
