What Is The Definition Of Spare In Bowling?
1. A spare in bowling is when the bowler knocks down the rest of the pins on the second roll. In order to receive a spare, no pins can be left standing by the end of the second roll.
When a bowler achieves a spare, they are awarded 10 points (one for each pin), plus a bonus of however number of pins are knocked over on the first roll of the next frame.
Here’s an example of a spare scoring breakdown:
- Frame 1, Ball 1: 6
- Frame 1, Ball 2: 4
- Frame 2, Ball 1: 5
- Frame 2, Ball 2: 4
- Total Score: 6 + 4 + 5 + (5+4) = 19 total points
The points from Frame 2, Ball 1 is the bonus for hitting a spare in the previous frame.
