What Is The Definition Of Piste In Fencing?
1. A piste is the strip of flooring marked as the playing area during a fencing bout. Fencers must remain within the boundaries of the piste during the bout. If one or both feet go off the side edges, a halt is called and the fencer’s opponent gets to advance one meter toward them. If a fencer retreats off the end of the piste, a touch is awarded to the opponent.
Typically, a piste is 1.5 to 2 meters wide (about 5 to 6.5 feet) and 14 meters long (about 46 feet). A line is drawn across the center of the piste to mark the midpoint. The en-garde lines are placed about two meters on either side of the midpoint. Warning lines are placed two meters from each end of the strip, serving as reference points as fencers retreat. When electronic scoring is used, a conductive piste is grounded to a scoring box. This ensures that if a fencer accidentally hits the piste, it won’t be registered as a touch.
