pay*off pitch
What Is The Definition Of Payoff Pitch In Baseball?
1. This is the name of the pitch that occurs when there is a full count on the batter. Because there has been at least five pitches thrown during the at-bat, the next pitch will either “payoff” for the hitter (who gets a hit or a walk) or for the pitcher (who will get a strikeout or fielding out).
There can be more than six pitches thrown during the at-bat, as a foul ball can prolong the at-bat.
This term is most often used when there is a running in scoring position and a hit can score a run, or a strikeout will end the inning.
