What Is The Definition Of Moonshot In Baseball?
1. This is a term used in baseball and softball to describe a home run that is hit extremely high and towering into the sky.
Although many people may think that the term originated as if to describe a home run that could nearly hit the moon, the first time moonshot was coined was by Los Angeles Dodgers announcer Vin Scully when he described home runs hit by former Dodgers player, Wally Moon. Moon was known to hit opposite field home runs into the right field stands at the Los Angeles Coliseum, that was only 251 feet from home plate. However, his home runs were hit extremely high, perhaps on average of 42 feet high. Because of this, Scully often called his home runs “moonshots”, and soon it would catch on after newspapers began to use the phrase.
