What Is The Definition Of Marking In Soccer?
1. This is a defensive strategy that a team uses when they pair up one of their defenders against one of their opponents. The defensive player’s main objective is to prevent the offensive player from playing any part in a goal, making a pass or even receiving a pass from a teammate. The defensive player has to play extremely close to the offensive player in order for this defensive strategy to be effective.
There are a two main marking strategies that a team will employ.
Man-To-Man Marking
This type of marking is when a defender is specifically assigned a player to follow the entire match.
Zonal Marking
This type of marking has become more popular in today’s game. When the “marked” player comes into a defender’s zone, then the defender is tasked with marking that offensive player. Once the marked player leaves the defender’s zone, then it is up to the defender in the new zone to starting marking the designated offensive player.
