live ball
What Is The Definition Of Live Ball In Baseball?
1. A live ball in baseball refers to any time the ball is put into play, therefore allowing the game to proceed. Once the pitcher stands on the rubber on the mound and the catcher, batter, and umpire are all “ready”, then the the ball is live. An umpire may also signal or yell “play ball” in order to call for the game to proceed.
Once there is a live ball, there are many actions that can begin to take place. For instance, if there is a runner on base and the pitcher stands on the mound, the runner can then attempt to steal a base if they so choose. However, all players must remain alert and attentive, even after an out, as the ball is still considered live and in-play until an umpire signals the ball dead or there is a stop in game play.
Example Of How Live Ball Is Used In Commentary
1. With no one signaling the play dead and it still being a live ball, Trout sneaks into second after he catches the pitcher sleeping with his back turned to first base.
