What Is The Definition Of Lane Violation In Basketball?
1. A lane violation is another term used to describe a 3-second violation in basketball. A player commits a lane violation when they stand in the restricted area (or key), for more than three consecutive seconds while their team has the ball in the frontcourt. It doesn’t matter if the player is in possession of the ball or not, they cannot stand in the key for three seconds or longer.
The purpose of this rule is to make sure that the offensive player does not gain a competitive edge by camping under the basket and establishing a favorable position.
