What Is The Definition Intentional Walk In Baseball?
1. This is when the pitcher walks a batter on purpose, to either set-up a better defensive scenario, such as a double play, or because the match-up favors the batter over the pitcher. The pitcher usually tosses the ball off the plate, opposite the batter, where the catcher then side steps over to catch it. The pitcher tosses the ball far enough off the plate so that the batter has no chance of hitting the ball.
