What Is The Definition Of First Down In Football?

1. This is the first in a series of four downs that an offensive team has to gain 10 yards. If a team gains 10 yards, then they will be granted a first down and a new series of four downs. The amount of yards can be more or less than 10 yards if the offensive or defensive team is called for penalties.

Examples Of How First Down Is Used In Commentary

1. The receiver hauls in that 20 yard pass for an easy first down.

2. And with that touchback, it will be 1st and 10 on the twenty yard-line.

3. With that false start penalty, it’s now 1st and 15 for the offense at the twenty yard-line.
