SportsLingo Goes The Extra-Inch With The Meaning Of Fast Break
Fast breaks tend to be set-up from a good defensive play, such as a steal or block. When the team gains possession of the ball, say from a steal, more likely than not the team will pass the ball to one of their smaller and faster guards. The ball-handler then races up-court, with at least two other wing players to either side of them. Because the team has rushed up the court, the other team rarely has time to set-up their defense, therefore giving an advantage to the team on the fast break.
With teammates on either side of them, the point guard can either pass it to a teammate for a jump shot or layup, or they can simply try to score themselves.
