What Is The Definition Of Composition In Gymnastics?
1. Composition refers to the arrangement of a gymnast’s routine in a competition event. The structure of the composition consists of each individual skill, element, or movement and how those are ordered throughout the routine.
What Are Composition Requirements in Gymnastics?
Each gymnastics event has composition requirements (CR) that must be included in order to achieve a certain score. For example, a floor exercise composition may need to include:
- Non-acrobatic elements, such as turns or handstands
- Acrobatic elements (both forward and backward), such as handsprings or somersaults
- A dismount, which is usually a tumbling pass composed of several skills
Points are awarded for each of the composition requirements. Additional points can be earned from connection value (CV), which is the connection of two or more elements, and difficulty value (DV), which is based on how challenging each element is.
