code of points
What Is The Definition Of Code Of Points In Gymnastics?
1. The Code of Points is the official scoring system used by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). It determines how many points gymnasts receive for each skill in their routine.
Which Gymnastics Competitions Use The Code Of Points?
The Code of Points is used for most elite level gymnastics competitions, including the Olympic Games, World Gymnastics Championships, and World Games.
How Are Points Awarded In Gymnastics?
Gymnasts are awarded points based on the difficulty and execution of elements in their routine.
The 10 most challenging elements, including the dismount, comprise the Difficulty Score. Each type of skill is assigned a difficulty value based on how advanced it is. For example, a triple salto has a higher difficulty value than a double salto. The difficulty values range from A-J for women’s gymnastics and A-I for men’s gymnastics, with A being the easiest level.
The Difficulty Score is combined with the Execution Score, which the judges determine based on artistry, technique, and composition. The Execution Score starts at 10, and then deductions are made for each fault in the routine. Deductions begin at 0.1 for small errors and go up to 0.8 for bigger mistakes, such as a fall.
Additional score deductions may be made for other criteria, such as stepping out of bounds, time violations, and attire violations.
Why Did They Change The Scoring In Gymnastics?
After some gymnastics scoring controversies at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, the FIG decided to completely overhaul the Code of Points. Previously, gymnasts received a score out of a maximum possible 10 points. The new system, which was implemented in 2006, does not have an upper limit on scoring.
Proponents of the new Code of Points say that it provides more reliable and objective scoring. Those who oppose it say that the updated rules deemphasize the artistry of the sport and are difficult for those outside gymnastics to understand. Another criticism involves the fact that, simply based on the difficulty rating of the routines, some gymnasts in a competition will be unable to reach the winner’s circle no matter how well they perform.
Example Of How Code of Points Is Used In Commentary
1. Simone Biles‘ wildly impressive Yurchenko Double Pike received a provisional value of just 6.6, a score that many say is undervalued by the Code of Points.
