but*ton*hook route
What Is The Definition Of Buttonhook Route In Football?
1. The buttonhook route is a type of receiver route that a receiver runs in football where they run a certain distance straight up the field, then immediately digs in, stops and runs back a short distance towards the quarterback. The receiver must convince the defensive back that they are running a deep route, therefore must run at full speed so that the defender will turn their back and run hard as well. Because the defensive back now has their back to the quarterback, once the wide receiver reaches their desired distance, they will plant hard to stop, come back and hopefully be open enough to receive the pass from the quarterback.
