break*a*way
What Is The Definition Of Breakaway In Hockey?
1. This is a term in hockey when a player has possession of the puck and there are no defenders in front of them, except for the goalie. It essentially sets up a 1-on-1 match-up between the offensive player with the puck and the goalie.
Breakaways usually occur when there is a mistake on defense that allows the skater to have an open path to the goal. Defenders will tend to hang back in order to avoid this from occurring.
If a player is on a breakaway and a defending player skates them down and obstructs their progress or illegally drags them down, then the offensive player would be awarded a penalty shot. For instance, tripping from behind would result in a penalty shot.
