What Is The Definition Of Air Raid Offense In Football?
1. This is a type of offense in football that relies heavy on the passing game, mainly with short passes. Teams that employ the air raid offense, mainly in college, will usually have 75 percent of their plays throughout the season be passing plays. This type of offense also give the quarterback much freedom to call audibles at the line of scrimmage.
Although there are multiple formations for the air raid offense, it is common for the quarterback to sit back in the shotgun, with four wide receivers and one running back. This is to help spread out the defense and to allow for more space in the middle of the field for the receivers to get open.
The air raid offense was popularized and given notoriety from head coach LaVell Edwards during his time at BYU during the 1970s and through to the 1990s.
