Four teams play in the National Football League’s AFC South conference, one of four divisions that comprise the American Football Conference (AFC) that play opposite the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC). The four teams that represent the AFC South include:
When did the AFC South start playing?
The AFC South, short for American Football Conference, is relatively young, getting their start in 2002 as a result of the NFL’s realignment. Prior to the 2002 season, the Houston Texans didn’t even exist, and the Indianapolis Colts were previously a member of the AFC East. The Titans and Jaguars were members of the now-defunct AFC Central. At the inception of the AFC South, none of the four teams had ever played more than 18 seasons in their home cities. Before relocation to Indianapolis, the Colts called Baltimore home and played there until 1983.
What are the records of the AFC South teams?
Since three of the league’s teams existed before the Houston Texans, they have records with substantially more wins representing their lengthy time in the league, in addition to former Super Bowl and AFL titles.
Here are the overall records for each AFC South team, prior to the start of the 2022 season.
- Colts: 543-481-7 with a playoff record of 23-25 and three NFL championships and two Super Bowl titles in four appearances.
- Titans: 463-480-6 with a playoff record of 17-23 and two AFL championships and a Super Bowl loss.
- Jaguars: 180-253 record with a 7-7 playoff record and no Super Bowl appearances.
- Texans: 139-182 record with a playoff record of 4-6 and no Super Bowl appearances.
What AFC South teams have won championships?
While a few of the representatives of the AFC South own titles, only a single team — the Colts — have earned a Super Bowl since the division’s inception in 2022. That title came in 2006 when Payton Manning led the Colts to a victory over the NFC representative Chicago Bears, 29-17 in Miami in Super Bowl XLI. It remains the only Super Bowl win in the division to date.
Currently, the AFC South is the owner of the league’s longest Super Bowl title drought.
