There are 11 players on defense in football. In order to prevent the offense from scoring a touchdown, players of different sizes and speeds are used to stop the ball from moving down the field. The traditional defensive positions in football include:
- Defensive line
- Defensive ends (DE)
- Defensive tackles (DT)
- Linebackers (LB)
- Cornerbacks (CB)
- Safeties (S)
- Strong safety (SS)
- Free safety (FS)
Bigger players, known as the defensive line or front four, play along the line of scrimmage and engage with the offensive linemen. Faster players play in the secondary and try to prevent long plays or wide receivers from catching the ball.
