I know it’s on my mind, is it on yours?
Just exactly how much is that golden World Cup trophy worth?
As we all watched Germany hoist the famous trophy over their heads on Sunday after their victory over Argentina, many wondered how much the Cup is actually worth. As the German team kissed the trophy for the first time since 1990, and for the fourth time in their country’s history, the actual value of the trophy that the teams have fought for years to attain is not discussed too often.
Well, if you want to know some interesting stats about the World Cup, here are some for you:
- It weighs 13.61 pounds
- It’s made up of 75 percent pure 18-karat gold (BLING!)
- In 2010, it was valued around $10 million, which means the value has gone up as the value of gold has gone up.
- Since 1974, the winning team has not been able to take the trophy home due to the high possibility of theft. They’re later sent a gold-plated replica in its place.
A gold-plated replica? Imagine telling the Stanley Cup Finals winner that they can’t hold onto the Cup for the off season after they’ve worked so hard for it? I’d be a tad pissed if they gave me a plastic mug to drink my beer out of.
Well, when in Rome. Actually that doesn’t apply here. Nevermind.
