Washington’s NFL team is getting a new name and look.
On Monday morning, the NFL franchise announced that it is retiring the Redskins name and logo. A new name and logo are still under consideration and will be announced at a later date. The team will continue to use the Redskins name and web destination until a new name is decided.
On July 3rd, the team had announced that they were doing a thorough review of the teams’ 87-year-old name, which is considered a slur against Native Americans.
In the past, team owner Dan Snyder has said he would never change the name.
However amidst the social uprising following the death of George Floyd, Snyder has reconsidered. With sponsors, corporations, and individuals threatening to remove their affiliation with the organization, the team immediately began considering the name change.
According to the Washington Post, the team does have a preferred replacement name in mind, but it being held up by trademark issues.
