Are the Cavs making one last push to impress the King?
According to Terry Pluto at Cleveland.com, the Cleveland Cavaliers are one of multiple teams who have contacted the San Antonio Spurs regarding a trade for Kawhi Leonard.
This may be one last attempt by the Cavs to keep LeBron James in Ohio. If the Cavs were to acquire the level of superstar that is Leonard, this would give them another solid big three that could challenge any team with James, Leonard and Kevin Love.
However, the Spurs would most likely want another star in return, in addition to picks and younger players. The Cavs may have to pony up Love in a package, in addition to their number eight pick in Thursday’s draft and a few of their young, supporting players.
The Cavs probably couldn’t afford that, and if they could, the Cavs probably wouldn’t have a good enough supporting cast to help James make another run to the Finals. We all saw what happened a few weeks ago versus Curry and the gang.
Which leads to people think that the Cavs may be preparing for the departure of James.
If James were to leave via free agency, the team may be preparing for a life at LeBron and will need another young, superstar to rebuild around. Leonard would certainly fit that mold.
Even if that were the case, it’s doubtful that Leonard would go to a team that would be in rebuilding mode after being on a winner his entire career in San Antonio. And if he were to approve the trade, it’s more unlikely that he would sign a long-term deal since he’s expressed where he’d ideally like to play.
With all the uncertainties that would need to happen for this trade to take place, it’s more likely to see these two stars play together on the Lakers than for the Cavs.
