It was going to happen any day now, and it finally has.
Albert Pujols joined the 500 home run club today after hitting a two-run bomb into the left-center seats against Taylor Jordan of the Washington Nationals. It was his second home run of the night.
Pujols, who wears number five and slugged his 500th home run in the top of the fifth inning, becomes just the 26th player to hit at least 500 home runs and the third youngest to achieve the feat. Had injuries not gotten to him the past few seasons, he might have gotten there sooner.
Oh, and to top off the :number five theme” for the night, Pujols also finished with five RBIs. Something was a little magical about the night.
With eight home runs in total for the early season, I’m sure the Angels hope Pujols plays like his old self the rest of the season. They’ll need it, especially with Josh Hamilton sitting with an injury.
Congratulations, Albert. Now here’s to chasing number 600.
