On January 6, 1951, an NBA game between the Indianapolis Olympians and Rochester Royals set the record for the longest basketball game in history. They played four 12-minute quarters (48 minutes) and six overtime periods lasting five minutes each (30 minutes) for a total of 78 minutes.
The Olympians beat the Royals 75–73. Coincidentally, this is the same final score in the longest college basketball game in history.
